Elegant scarf in peace silk habotai, lovingly dyed and printed by hand with sustainable methods and materials. Hand dyed with logwood dye, handprinted with wisteria land passion fruit eaves from my garden and silver maple leaves from my neighbourhood [SC278].
The ‘peace’ silk is harvested after the silk worms have fed on organic mulberry trees in Hertfordshire UK, and metamorphosed from their cocoons into moths, avoiding the violent process of mass produced silk.
The peace silk was mordanted with alum, followed by copper. It was then dipped in iron sulphate solution, covered with the leaves and bundled carefully with a carrier blanket of logwood dye, before steaming in my trusty fish kettle for 70 minutes. The plant pigments mobilise in the heat and moisture, transfer to the scarf and fix thanks to the presence of the alum, copper and iron mordants.
Scarf measures approx 130 x 33cm.
Presented in environmentally friendly cardboard presentation box.
